Radio receivers

Nowadays most common radio receivers are with 6 and 8 channels but you can find versatile 2.4Gh, 915MHz, and 868MHz radio systems with up to 16 channels.

According to the adopted modulation, radio receivers can be categorized in:

  • PWM RX (Pulse Width Modulation);
  • PPM receivers (Pulse Position Modulation);
  • CPPM receivers (Combined PPM);
  • SBUS receivers (Serial Bus  aka S.BUS);
  • DSM2/DSMX receivers (Digital System Multiplexer);
  • ExpressLRS radio receivers.

Radio receivers for drones and quadcopters

Just few of the best radio receiver brands: FrSky, Futaba/Spektrum, iRangeX, RadioLink, FlySky, ELRS, and Walkera.

Which type of receiver should you use?

Tough question, When it comes to choosing one I would personally suggest FrSky radio system for multi-rotors but I also like the much cheaper FlySky radio.

CYCLONE Nano 2400RX ExpressLRS radio receiver

CYCLONE Nano 2400RX ELRS
The CYCLONE Nano2400RX ELRS receiver has a power amplifier (PA+LNA), so it has a 100mW telemetry output and better sensitivity at longer distances. It adopts the IPEX1 generation antenna base and cooperates with an external dipole T-type antenna. The Nano 2400RX module measures just 11x18x3mm and weighs only 3 grams. It features an IPEX1 antenna plug and comes with a...

RadioMaster ELRS EP1 & EP2 Nano RX radio receivers

RadioMaster EP1 and EP2 Nano RX
A few months ago, RadioMaster introduced two ExpressLRS-compatible radio receivers with their Zorro transmitter. This review will look more closely at the RadioMaster ELRS EP1 and EP2 Nano RX ELRS radio receivers. ExpressLRS is a relatively new radio protocol that is focused on range and latency. Regarding remote drone operation, these are the two most important factors besides reliability. Being...

RadioMaster RP4TD: GEMINI ready ELRS diversity RX

RadioMaster RP4TD
RadioMaster is a company that, from the beginning, started to offer ExpressLRS-compatible devices, including transmitters and receivers. Their new RP4TD diversity ELRS RX module comes with a dual-antenna system for improved range and penetration. When paired with TX modules such as the BetaFPV SuperG, you can use the ELRS Gemini mode. To ensure improved stability, regardless of temperature, the RadioMaster...

HGLRC Herme ExpressLRS: ELRS TX/RX (900MHz/2.4GHz)

HGLRC Herme ExpressLRS TX and RX
After Happymodel and BetaFPV, HGLRC also announced their first ExpressLRS enabled radio system. Like its contenders, the Herme ExpressLRS also has 900Mhz and 2.4GHz versions. ExpressLRS (ELRS) is an open-source RC link for various applications, including drone communications. ELRS uses LoRa modulation with strong anti-interference technology to achieve long-range transmission with low power usage. HGLRC claims that the Herme ExpressLRS...

SEQURE FPV Parts review: H743 FC, E70 G2 ESC, M10-12 GPS & Dual ELRS RX

SEQURE FPV Parts
SEQURE is a well-known company in the world of FPV (First Person View) due to its excellent pen-style soldering irons. Lately, it has also started providing FPV drone parts for the community. In this review, we will have a close look at its powerful flight stack, GPS module, and ELRS radio receiver. Building an FPV drone involves several steps, including...

iFlight ELRS RX (2.4Ghz & 868/912MHz)

iFlight ELRS RX
iFlight is the latest FPV drone brand that joined the ExpressLRS platform. The iFlight ELRS RX is available with two frequency options: 2.4 GHz and 868/912 MHz. Will the higher frequency version provide a longer range, the lower frequency edition has better penetration for flying between buildings and other obstacles. The iFlight ExpressLRS 2.4G RX comes with four antenna options....

BetaFPV SuperD ELRS Diversity Receiver

SuperD ELRS Diversity Receiver
BetaFPV's new SuperD ELRS 2.4G Diversity Radio Receiver has dual RF receiver chains with two antennas, ensuring longer and more stable flying for FPV drones and other RC flying machines. It is equipped with two T-type antennas, just like the Happymodel EP1. The BetaFPV SuperD ELRS RX module measures 22x14mm and weighs about 1 gram without the antennas. It features...

BETAFPV radio ELRS Series (RX + TX)

BETAFPV ELRS Series
BetaFPV is about to release its first radio communication system based on the ExpressLRS opensource project. ExpressLRS aims to achieve the best possible link performance in both speeds, latency, and range. This makes ExpressLRS one of the fastest RC links available while still offering long-range performance. The BetaFPV ELRS Nano TX module will compatible with many popular remote controllers,...

RadioMaster Bandit ExpressLRS: 915MHz ELRS RX and TX

RadioMaster Bandit series (TX and RX)
After testing so much 2.4GHZ ELRS hardware, I thought it was time to review some 915MHz equipment too. RadioMaster's Bandit series includes three TX units (RF, Micro, and NANO) and two RX modules (BR1 and BR3). In this article, we will check out the features and how to set up the Bandit Nano transmitter module and BR3 radio receiver. ExpressLRS...

FrSky receivers with PPM, CPPM and SBUS: XSR and D8

FrSky receivers: D8 and XSR
Today, I will review two FrSky receivers, the mini D8 and the XSR ACCST. While the Micro Frsky D8 features PPM and SBUS, the FrSky XSR has S-Bus CPPM output. For those who are new in the field, let me say a few words about radio receivers. Their main function is to interlink wirelessly the flight controller with the transmitter...
