Radio receivers

Nowadays most common radio receivers are with 6 and 8 channels but you can find versatile 2.4Gh, 915MHz, and 868MHz radio systems with up to 16 channels.

According to the adopted modulation, radio receivers can be categorized in:

  • PWM RX (Pulse Width Modulation);
  • PPM receivers (Pulse Position Modulation);
  • CPPM receivers (Combined PPM);
  • SBUS receivers (Serial Bus  aka S.BUS);
  • DSM2/DSMX receivers (Digital System Multiplexer);
  • ExpressLRS radio receivers.

Radio receivers for drones and quadcopters

Just few of the best radio receiver brands: FrSky, Futaba/Spektrum, iRangeX, RadioLink, FlySky, ELRS, and Walkera.

Which type of receiver should you use?

Tough question, When it comes to choosing one I would personally suggest FrSky radio system for multi-rotors but I also like the much cheaper FlySky radio.

FrSky receivers with PPM, CPPM and SBUS: XSR and D8

FrSky receivers: D8 and XSR
Today, I will review two FrSky receivers, the mini D8 and the XSR ACCST. While the Micro Frsky D8 features PPM and SBUS, the FrSky XSR has S-Bus CPPM output. For those who are new in the field, let me say a few words about radio receivers. Their main function is to interlink wirelessly the flight controller with the transmitter...

Happymodel EP1 Dual ELRS Receiver: True Diversity!

Happymodel EP1 Dual ELRS
The Happymodel EP1 is the first ELRS-enabled true diversity radio receiver. It aims to provide the best range even in difficult conditions. Happymodel EP1 has two antennas and two radio modules for doubling the signal quality. In theory, "Diversity" uses at the time only one antenna by toggling to the antenna that has the strongest signal. The EP1 uses...

HGLRC Herme ExpressLRS: ELRS TX/RX (900MHz/2.4GHz)

HGLRC Herme ExpressLRS TX and RX
After Happymodel and BetaFPV, HGLRC also announced their first ExpressLRS enabled radio system. Like its contenders, the Herme ExpressLRS also has 900Mhz and 2.4GHz versions. ExpressLRS (ELRS) is an open-source RC link for various applications, including drone communications. ELRS uses LoRa modulation with strong anti-interference technology to achieve long-range transmission with low power usage. HGLRC claims that the Herme ExpressLRS...
