The DJI AVATA drone comes with three radio modes, according to your geographical location and RF regulation. While the FCC mode (US region) provides a range of up to 10KM, the CE mode (Europe region) has a range of about 2KM. Of course, these distances can be obtained only in optimal conditions, flat ground, no obstacles, and low RF noise. After unlocking FCC mode, the VTX power increased from a few mW to over 1W. Remember that 25mW is the maximum unlicensed power you’re allowed to transmit in many countries worldwide, particularly in Europe (CE). That means performing this range hack without owning the required permits to transmit stronger signals would be illegal.
Transmission Power (EIRP):
- FCC: < 33 dBm
- CE: < 14 dBm
- SRRC: < 30 dBm

Unlocking FCC mode on the AVATA drone is extremely easy. You just need to create an empty plain text file with the name ‘ham_cfg_support’, save it with no extension, and copy it to the root of the micro SD card on the DJI Goggle 2 or FPV Goggles v2. After you restart the goggles and power ON the drone FCC-mode is enabled, you can enjoy the best range regardless of your location. The hack is persistent and DJI Fly APP proof.
This range hack works also on the Avata 2?
According to Oscar, the new Avata2 is no longer recognizes the ham file for switching to FCC mode or enabling additional channels. CE version can’t be used in FCC mode for now
Hi! I did the hack but I still only see 5.8GHz on the manual selection. How do I know FCC is now enabled?
If you see channels, the FCC hack worked.
Hi all!
I performed the FCC range hack on the Avata drone. My question is, do I keep on flying on automatic channel selection or set it to manual?
Thanks
Has anyone hacked the DJI Avata and removed the 500m height limit? I want to fly in the mountains and need more than 120m. Thanks David from Australia
When I bought the AVATA drone I did the system updates, that’s probably why now I can’t get it through the fcc. Could there be another method, please?
It worked like a charm! Thanks
Thanks for the great hacking tip. I need to ask if this is possible if one is using the motion controller on the DJI Avata?
Many thanks.
Stan
do I have to use the App? or should it be enough to plug in the SD?
I followed all the instructions but still I am in CE mode. I did it twice.
can it be that it workes only with the controller but not with the motion controller (the like joystick)?
Thanks
After doing the CE to FCC mod, I can get 8000 meters in open field!
if im in the USA will it increase my range still?
NO effect, in the US the AVATA works in FCC mode by default, this mod is not required.
Thanks! there is a huge difference between CE and FCC.
My DJI Avata lost the signal at only 500m far from Homepoint. Are any ideas, please help
Btw, I’m in Italy (CE MODE, I think)
Works perfectly, thanks. was flying inside a disused factory at the weekend and had no penetration issues at all.
Has anyone done the altitude and NFZ hack?
Great info! Thanks for sharing!
Welcome!
is this range hack reversible?
Yes!
Thanks! Unlocking FCC mode on the AVATA drone was extremely easy :)
This was extremely helpful! Thanks for sharing it
Hello, is there any way to remove wuth FCC hack altitude limit of Avata?
Thanks for your help!
FCC hack is crucially important for AVATA not just because to fly super far away, but is able to penetrate between obstacles.
Worked in Italy, thank you!
I would also like to know once the file is installed and it is FCC enabled, should you keep it in Auto mode or put to it to a specific Channel within Manual – 40Mhz?
Once the file is installed and it is FCC enabled, should you keep it in Auto mode or put to it to a specific Channel within Manual – 40Mhz?
Remember: More Range = More heat + More power consumtion!
Is there any way to confirm that the setting had changed to FCC? Other than flying it?
Why do I start losing signal about 500yards out? Even after the FCC mod
Thanks! Now it is usable in the UK. Penetration is significantly improved.
R.I.P. Queen Elizabeth.
Thanks for sharing the FCC mod. There is a way for Geo Zone unlocking?
Cool!
It works also for the UK not just in the Europe?
Yes, FCC range hack works regardless of your region.
Great article! Is there an easy way to change it back to CE settings, if you just want to try it out, but then fly legally again?
I think deleting the file and resetting the goggles would revert the stock settings.
Thanks! Will try that!
U can just remove the `ham_cfg_support` file from the SD card, restart the goggles and drone and it will switch back to whatever region you are in.
Sweet, thanks for your help!
Thanks mate!
I can’t wait to test it.
Here in Germany the range is horrible :(
Hi, Finn,
Do you know the penalties for using the FCC hack in Germany?
I believe no authority EVER in ANY country checked if a DJI Drone is in FCC Mode or not. I have license to fly in Europe and Thailand and I am using my DJI FPV Drone constantly and NEVER EVER anyone asked me anything. Except in Germany. Here the people that live here want to call the police immediately. Horrible Country :)
