GoPro 13 Black vs Insta360 Ace Pro 2: Two Action Cameras, One Clear Winner?

Last week, we published an in-depth comparison of the GoPro 13 Black and DJI Action 5 Pro, where we mentioned that Insta360 is about to release a new product that will likely dominate the action camera market. Let’s see if the AI-powered 8K recording, large foldable LCD, and Leica lens can beat the well-established GoPro, which has over 20 years of experience in this industry—especially since the Ace Pro 2 is priced similarly to its closest competitors in the action camera market, such as the GoPro Hero 13 Black and DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro.

Measuring 71.9 x 52.2 x 38mm, the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 is noticeably larger than the GoPro Hero 13 and also significantly heavier (177.2g vs 159g). The larger size and added weight become an issue when trying to mount the action camera on your FPV drone.

Both cameras feature a dual-display system. While the Ace Pro 2 has a small status mono screen in front and a big foldable touchscreen on the back. In contrast, the Hero 13 Black has two color live-view displays. Personally, I prefer the Insta360’s flip screen, giving you a larger view for selfies.

Image quality and stabilization

While the GoPro 13 has a 27-megapixel 1/1.9-inch sensor, the Ace Pro 2 has a larger 50-megapixel 1/1.3-inch sensor. A bigger sensor can capture more light, resulting in better performance in low-light conditions. This is crucial for shooting in dimly lit environments or during nighttime activities.

The GoPro 13 can also record 5.3K with up to 60fps or 4K with up to 120fps. The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 promise 8K@30fps and 4K@120fps videos. In terms of slow motion, there is also a slight difference. With the GP, you can record 720p@400fps; with the DJI, you can record 4K@120fps.

The GoPro 13 features HyperSmooth 6.0 that boasts advanced algorithms that improve stabilization significantly over previous versions, making it ideal for high-action scenarios. It can effectively eliminate shakes, bumps, and jitters, even in dynamic environments. In contrast, the Ace Pro 2’s FlowState provides smooth stabilization across all axes and is known for its effectiveness in correcting tilts and shakes. It’s particularly beneficial in 360-degree filming scenarios.

Operation time and environment

The Hero 13 Black is powered by the new 1950 mAh Enduro battery the provides about 150 mins of recording time. Despite that the Ace Pro 2 is powered by a slightly smaller Li-ION pack (1800mAh) it has 30 minutes longer recording time.

While the GoPro 13 can be safely used in temperatures from -10 to 35°C, the Ace Pro 2 is more suitable for extreme temperatures, as it supports -20 to 45°C. The GP13 can be immersed underwater up to 10 meters, while the AP2 can go up to 12 meters, without requiring an additional case.

Bottom line

When I saw the specs and features of the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 yesterday, I was a bit disappointed that I had just ordered the GoPro 13, as it seems to be inferior in many ways. With its 8K capabilities and excellent low light performance, it’s hard to compete. Especially, that both cameras have the same price tag.

On the other hand, the dual-screen setup of the GoPro suits my shooting style better than the flip screen of the Ace Pro 2.
