ISDT Q6 Retro: Budget-Friendly LiPo Charger with Vintage Flair

Compact size, 350W charger power, LIPO destroy mode, Mobile APP, BattAIR support, upgradable firmware, and more!

ISDT Q6 Retro

Blending multiple charging programs with a touch of nostalgia, the ISDT Q6 Retro charger with a vintage design is a standout choice for those who appreciate both functionality and style. This portable charger not only offers smart features like app control and automatic parameter detection for BattAir LIPOs, but also brings a vintage aesthetic that sets it apart from conventional chargers. In this review, we’ll examine its design, features, and performance to see how it meets the needs of modern users while evoking the charm of the past.

ISDT’s Q6 series includes four models: Q6 Lite, Q6 Plus, Q6 Pro BattGO, and Q6 Retro. All versions feature a compact size, one-key shuttle control, a 2.4″ IPS LCD, and high charging power (200-350W).

The ISDT Q6 Retro multi-chemistry charger is compatible with most commonly used rechargeables, such as LiPo, LiHv, LiFe, NiMH, and Pb. FPV drones are powered mainly by LiPo (4.20V) and LiHv (4.35V) batteries, which are supported up to 6S by this charger (S – represents the number of cells connected serially). In addition to charge, discharge, and storage tasks, it has a “Destroy” mode for safe battery retirement.

ISDT Q6 Retro smart charger review

Disclosure: I received this retro-style smart charger for a product review collaboration with ISDT. Product specs and quality may vary according to the manufacturer’s reliability, so I cannot guarantee that you will get a charger that performs precisely the same as seen in my review.

Unboxing

A few weeks ago, ISDT contacted me about reviewing some of their second-generation BattAir LIPO batteries. I happily accepted, and additionally, I requested a compatible charger. I hoped to receive their latest K2-ZIP dual-channel AC/DC charger, but they sent this older model.

Charging Tasks

The ISDT Q6 Retro measures 80*80*33.5 mm and weighs around 120 grams. On the front panel, there is a large 2.4″ IPS display with up to 178° visible angle and auto-brightness level. Below the screen is a speed dial that allows easy control of the unit. Pressing the dial as a push-button, you can start/stop programs or enter the configuration menu. Rotate up or down to navigate between menus or change various parameters.

Balance and discharge ports

On the left side, there is an XT60 power input connector and a Type-C firmware port. On the right, there is the 6p balance and XT 60 main port. The back has a cooling fan, which you should avoid covering, as well as ventilation holes. A built-in sensor monitors the unit’s temperature. When it is in high-power use, the charger makes a loud noise that will disturb you while watching TV.

Despite its small size, the Q6 Retro features a massive charging power of up to 350W/16A. I recommend using a 24V@10A AC/DC adapter to power the unit, but you can also use a high-capacity LiPo pack with an XT60 connector for field operation. Unlike modern smart chargers, the Q6 Retro can’t be powered through Type-C; the port serves only for firmware upgrades.

ISDLink mobile APP and BattAir compatibility

The Q6 Retro charger can be remotely monitored using the ISDLink mobile app thanks to the built-in Bluetooth connectivity. You can also stop the running task from your phone, but no other actions can be performed on the charger. As you can see in the photo below, the app follows the color scheme of the charger’s LCD. The app displays the progress level (in percent), battery type, charging current, individual cell voltage, and internal resistance (IR) during charging.

IMPORTANT: Even if the mobile app allows monitoring from another room, you should not leave the device unattended during the charging/discharging. LiPo batteries can easily catch fire or even explode. I also recommend using dedicated fireproof containers.

The Q6 Retro is fully compatible with the BattAir smart battery series and can automatically detect charging parameters (current and number of cells). The charger will also display the number of charging cycles, charge/discharge C rate, manufacturing date, and any alarms/abnormalities.
