MEPS SZ2207: Are these FPV motors better than company’s reputation?

1750/1950/2750KV brushless motors for 4S and 6S FPV drones

The SZ2207 will be the second FPV motor from MEPS reviewed here on FirstQuadcopter. Both motors are intended for 5-6″ racing drones. While the SZ2306’s stator has 23mm width and 6mm height, the SZ2207’s stator is 22 mm/7 mm. The 2207 has a narrower stator width, so you can expect lighter rotational inertia that allows for faster RPM changes, giving freestyle pilots superior responsiveness.

The Space SZ 2207 motors from MEPS have three KV options specially designed for 4S and 6S LiPo batteries and 5″ propellers. According to the KV version, these motors can generate power from 846.7W to 1148.4W. Regarding racing drones, you should consider a thrust-to-weight ratio of 10:1 or even 14:1. The company has two 3-blade prop options for these motors: SZ5145 (4.5-inch pitch) and SZ4942 (4.2-inch pitch).

MEPS Space SZ2207 review

Disclosure: I received these FPV motors for a product review collaboration with MEPS. Although the products were offered for free, all opinions in this article remain my own, and the sponsor did not influence me.

2207 vs 2306

In May 2023, when MEPS contacted me for the first time to review the SZ2306 motors, their product range only included two motors, an FC and an ESC. Now, nine months later, they have a much broader market offering. During this period, an aggressive marketing campaign offered free samples to many reviewers, including me. Many consider this strategy too pushy, but as long as they don’t try to influence the review’s outcome, it’s the right approach for a new brand that wants to aim high.

Together with the SZ2207 motors, MEPS included four sets of their propellers, SZ5145. I opted for green for both motors and propellers.

MEPS SZ2207: At a glance

The Meps SZ 2207 motors are intended for 5-6 inch FPV racing drones. There are three-speed versions: 1750KV (6S), 1950KV (4S/6S), and 2450KV (4S). You can choose from four beautiful color options: Fluorescent green, Titanium grey, Cyan, and Orange. Each motor comes with 5mm propeller lock nuts, a spare shaft screw, and a set of mounting screws (4xM3*7mm and 4xM3*10).

A tiny quality check (QC Pass) card is provided with each motor. I don’t know if they test each motor individually or if it is just a marketing trick.

The motors weigh about 34 grams and have 160mm long wires (20AWG). The white motor leads are pre-tinned for easy soldering. A slight grip is milled into the top of the bell to prevent slipping the propeller.

As you can guess from the product name, the status has a diameter of 22mm and a height of 7mm. The 1950KV version has a 66mΩ internal resistance and up to 1148.4W power. The unibell rotor is made from 6082 aluminum, and the shaft is made from TC4-reinforced titanium alloy. To be as light as possible, it uses a hollow shaft, which has become a market standard lately. The bell is mostly open for better cooling, hence increased efficiency.

The N52H arc curved magnets provide efficient and stable power while response time for maneuverability is minimal. The winding uses military-grade high-temperature enameled wires that promise to last up to 220°C.

The base has a 19x19mm mounting pattern with M3 screws. The MEPS SZ2207 motors are suitable for long-range, racing, and freestyle FPV drones. I recommend the 1950KV version with a 4S LIION battery for LR and the 1750KV with 6S LIPO for racing.

The overall build quality of the MEPS Space SZ2207 looks impressive for the low price. The bearings run smoothly when rotated by hand.

Pricing, availability, and bundles

The Space SZ2207 motors with three KV options can be purchased directly from MEPS’s online store. During their Holyday Flash Sale, you can get one motor for just $11.94 (40% off from regular price). For a bundle set of motors with propellers, you will need to pay $61.95. With your combo purchase, you will receive two battery straps and a hat for free. The five-motor kit (four + one spare) costs $66.45.

MEPS SZ2207: Best alternatives for your money

If you are building a 5″ FPV drone, MEPS is not the only brand you should look at when you choose the motors. For example, T-motor (which many believe is the brand behind the origin of MEPS) has some great options, such as the V2207 V2.0, P2207 V2.0, and F60PROV 2207.5. From iFlight, the XING2 2207 is also a great alternative.

After comparing many similar size motors, Chris Rosse concluded that these SZ2007 are the “MOST EFFICIENT“.

If weight is critical, you can also consider 2306 motors, as they are a few grams lighter and provide about the same performance.

Compared to other brands, MEPS motors are 10-25% cheaper than other brands, so if you are on a tight budget, it is probably the best option.

To complete your build, MEPS also has flight controller, ESCs and compatible propellers for $2.09/set. I’ve got to say that MEPS knows how to design some gorgeous motors. I love their fluorescent lime green color, if you crash the drone helps to find it much faster on any terrain. The white motor leads also make a cool contrast on the black carbon fiber frame.
Pros
+Friendly priced
+Excellent build quality
+Beautiful color options
+Multiple size and KV options
+Included mounting screws (two sizes)

Cons
- Bad reputation
1. I’ve got the mepsking motors on my 5inch builds. Order a spare when you initially order them, they don’t last too many flights
